“I used to carry some tools but I think the following car parts are even more important: radiator hoses, spark plugs, complete set of belts. Mechanics are inexpensive and if you get disabled on the highway, your best bet is to wait for the Green Angels. They can be a godsend. They work for the government in a truck full of parts, fluids, tools and two expert mechanics specializing in solving roadside car problems. They obviously can't always get you going like new but they can get you to the next town. If your car does break down out in the sticks, do not leave your car. As honest as Mexicans are, deserted cars are considered as 'open season' by enough that within a few hours, everything may be gone except the unibody without doors, wheels, windows, etc.

If you have an emergency while driving, call the Ministry of Tourism's hotline or (55) 5250-8221, extension 130/297, to obtain help from the “Green Angels,” a fleet of radio dispatched trucks with bilingual crews. Services include protection, medical first aid, mechanical aid for your car, and basic supplies. You will not be charged for services, only for parts, gas, and oil. The Green Angels patrol daily, from dawn until sunset. If you are unable to call them, pull off the road and lift the hood of your car; chances are good they will find you.
