Money Matters

“I either bring down a big wad of cash or use the atms...or both.”

"Always have money to pay for your gas, the stations do NOT accept credit cards! It is well worth your time to stop and get some money exchanged from US. to Pesos. Some banks will get the money exchanged for as little as ten dollars and will send it to your home. We do this before we go down, and then if we need more, use our debit card in an ATM."

"The worst exchange rate comes when you use US dollars with a Mexican. In addition, you are constantly running figures around in your head. And you mark yourself as someone who doesn't know any better."

“I bank at Citibank. Citibank is owned by Citicorp. Citicorp owns Banamex, the biggest or near biggest bank in Mexico. I use their ATM's all over the place. Hurricane John removed the last ATM machines here. So, I have to go to los Cabos or LaPaz for cash. Traveler's checks may be good some places.”

“There are ATM's in the big cities. Bring US dollars if you need to, they are accepted everywhere. There are many places to cash travelers cheques if you want to be really safe.”

“Use a bank ATM. They are generally safe. Alternative is to take American money and exchange at banks or even at cambios (money exchangers)”
